ENERGY SAVING TIPS

  1. When in the market for a new computer consider a laptop, it uses 5 times less energy than a Desktop and alot less space.
  2. Replace as many bulbs in your home with energy efficient bulbs, this will make a considerable difference to your energy costs.
  3. Washing clothes in cold water reduces approximately 2lbs of CO2 per load and uses alot less energy reducing your E.S.B. bill
  4. Get a lagging jacket for your hot water cylinder, its reduces approx 1000lbs of CO2 a year and consider turning down your thermostat by just 1 degree, both of these can greatly reduce your heating costs
  5. During summer months consider using a Clothes Line as opposed to Tumble Drier
  6. Unplug all electrical appliances when not in use, a Tv in standby mode can use up to half the energy it requires when switched on, also only plug in phone chargers when required.
  7. Try and use your car only when required and when changing your car consider a more efficent model with lower CO2 emmissions
  8. Put some green plants in your home, they can cheer up the place, improve air quality, absorb toxic gases from electronic equipment and maintain humidity
  9. Buy a programmable thermostat, it will automaticlly adjust the temperature as required. Lowering it by 2 degrees can save a tonne of CO2 a year
  10. Consider getting household bills emailed to you as this cuts down on paper waste.
  11. Install rain water storage tanks, this can be used for washing cars and flushing toilets and will greatly reduce your water consumption
  12. If stuck in traffic consider switching off the engine as idling cars spew out 1.7 billions tonnes of CO2 a year
  13. Use reuseable shopping bags as opposed to regular plastic ones, 500 billion plastic bags threaten wildlife, waste energy, pollute oceans and fill landfill sites every year
  14. Properly inflated tyres use alot less fuel, last longer and prevent approx 250lbs of CO2 emmissions a year.
  15. Support your local farmer buying fruit and veg, this eliminates fuel emmissons by long haul trucks.
  16. Consider replacing your old toilet with a low flow version, this reduces water consumption by 23,000 gallons a year for a 4 person household.
  17. Draught proof your windows and doors which will reduce your heating costs.
  18. Green power is renewable and polluting free, consider installing solar panels to provide hot water or maybe a wind turbine to provide electricity.
  19. Only put as much water as you need in a kettle when boiling it.
  20. Have a shower instead of a bath, you'll use alot less energy.
  21. Defrost your freezer at least once every 6 months, a build up of frost will cause it to use a lot more energy.
  22. Only use your dishwasher when full and put it on economy cycle when possible, also try letting them air dry when washing cycle is finished as opposed to the drying cycle in the washer.
